First weeks of school in art

We've been busy in the art room at Hollymead.  There are some changes that we've made to our space to make it more user friendly for choice based art activities.  We've also begun tracking what "centers" we go to each week using an art placemat.  We put a color dot showing which center we've been to today.
We've opened the painting and drawing centers so far.  Students have been experimenting with the various tools at these centers.

This year I've been making videos of me explaining centers.  The kids seem to love them and it saves me from saying the same thing over and over again.  I've been using Animoto, iMovie and iPhoto slideshow.  I hope to win some grants for equipment to make better videos in the future!
Kindergartners were busy showing me their cutting and drawing skills.  Student had to listen to directions like "Draw a pattern using straight lines in the rectangles."  After following directions for coloring in each shape on their paper, they were asked to  cut the shapes out and glue them down to make a person.  It's so interesting to see what they come up with!

Experimenting with chalk pastels.  Beautiful!!

Kindergartners have been learning how to use oil pastels and tempera paints.  We've also talked about how to hold a paintbrush and how to clean our brushes when we are done.
